What guttation actually is

Guttation is the release of liquid water from the edges or tips of leaves, driven from the inside out by pressure in the roots. It is not the same as dew. Dew forms on the outside of a leaf when moisture in the air condenses on a cool surface, so it settles all over the leaf. Guttation comes from within the plant and emerges only at specific points — usually the leaf tips and the little serrations along the margins — because that is where the plumbing lets it out.

The science: root pressure and hydathodes

During the day, plants lose water vapour through tiny pores called stomata in a process called transpiration, and that loss pulls a continuous stream of water up from the roots. At night, most plants close their stomata, so transpiration all but stops. But the roots do not stop working. If the soil is moist, they keep absorbing water and dissolved minerals, and with nowhere for it to escape by evaporation, pressure builds up inside the plant — this is called root pressure. That pressure pushes water up through the plant's internal pipework, the xylem, until it reaches specialised pores at the leaf margins called hydathodes, which release the excess as visible droplets. In short: roots pushing while leaves have stopped pulling equals droplets at the edges.

When and why it happens

Guttation is most obvious overnight and in the early morning, and it needs a particular combination of conditions: moist soil so the roots have plenty to draw on, high humidity so little water is lost to the air, and cooler, still night-time conditions with the stomata closed. That is exactly why you see it after a thorough evening watering, in a humid room, on a plant that is actively growing. It tends to fade once the sun is up, the air dries, and transpiration resumes.

Which plants do it

Some plants guttate far more visibly than others. Tropical aroids are the classic indoor examples — Monstera, philodendrons, pothos (Epipremnum), Alocasia, Syngonium and Anthurium all put on a good show, thanks to their vigorous roots, large leaves and prominent veins. Among garden and crop plants, grasses, cereals, tomatoes and strawberries are well-known guttators. If your particular plant never seems to do it, that is perfectly normal too; it simply reflects the species and its conditions.

Is it dew, sap, or a pest problem?

It is worth being able to tell guttation apart from things that do signal trouble. The droplets can look similar at a glance, but the pattern gives them away:

  • Guttation: clear droplets at leaf tips and edges, in the morning, on a healthy plant — harmless.
  • Dew: moisture evenly over the whole leaf surface and other cool objects nearby, from humid air condensing — also harmless.
  • Honeydew from pests: sticky, sometimes sooty residue scattered randomly across leaves and surfaces, often with visible insects like aphids or scale — a problem to treat.
  • Leaking sap: fluid from a specific cut or wound on the plant, not from the intact leaf margins — check for damage.

Is guttation harmful?

For the plant, occasional guttation is completely harmless — it is a sign the roots are active and the plant is well hydrated. There is one small footnote. Guttation fluid is not pure water: it carries dissolved minerals, sugars and other compounds from the xylem, so when the droplet evaporates it can leave a faint white or crusty residue on the leaf tip. If you water with hard tap water or feed heavily, that residue can build up and, over time, contribute to the browning of leaf tips. It is a minor effect, but it is why very frequent, heavy guttation is sometimes read as a gentle hint that you are watering a touch too generously.

Should you do anything about it?

In almost every case, nothing at all — enjoy it as a sign of a happy plant. If you are seeing heavy guttation night after night together with other signs of overwatering, such as consistently soggy soil, yellowing lower leaves or a musty smell, then treat it as one more nudge to let the compost dry out a little more between waterings and to check your drainage. And if the residue on the tips bothers you, switching to filtered or rainwater and wiping the leaves occasionally keeps them clean.
