Moss Poles: How to Train Your Plants to Climb

How to use a moss pole: which plants need one, installing it without wrecking roots, attaching stems, keeping it moist, and when to extend it.

A moss pole gives climbing houseplants like Monstera, Philodendron and Pothos a tree-trunk substitute: their aerial roots grip the damp moss, and in response the plant produces noticeably bigger, more mature leaves. Install the pole at repotting time, tie stems on loosely with soft ties, and keep the moss lightly moist so roots actually attach.
If your Monstera is flopping sideways over the edge of its pot, it isn't misbehaving — it's looking for a tree. Most of our favourite foliage houseplants are climbers from tropical forests, where they scramble up trunks toward the light. A moss pole is the indoor stand-in for that trunk, and it's the single cheapest upgrade you can give a climbing plant: same pot, same window, dramatically bigger leaves.
Why climbing changes how a plant grows
Many aroids have two growth modes. Sprawling along the ground, they stay in a juvenile form: smaller leaves, longer gaps between them. Once they attach to something vertical and climb, they shift toward their mature form — larger leaves, shorter internodes and, in Monstera deliciosa, dramatically more fenestrations (those famous splits). The aerial roots along the stem aren't decorative; they're anchors, and on a damp moss pole they'll grip and even root into the surface. That vertical, anchored growth is the signal the plant is waiting for.
Which plants actually want one
- Monstera deliciosa and Monstera adansonii — the classic candidates; climbing is the reliable route to fenestrated leaves.
- Climbing philodendrons and Syngonium — leaf size can double once they head upwards.
- Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) — famous for trailing, but it matures far more on a pole.
- Not needed: peace lilies, Calathea, snake plants, ZZ plants and other self-supporting, non-climbing species. A pole does nothing for them.
Choosing a pole
Sphagnum moss poles hold moisture well and give aerial roots the best grip, but they dry out fast indoors. Coir (coconut-fibre) poles are cheaper and tidier but harder for roots to penetrate. Stackable plastic-core moss poles solve the biggest design flaw of cheap poles — running out of height — and a flat wooden plank is a surprisingly effective, naturalistic alternative. Avoid bare untreated wooden cores, which rot at the soil line within a season or two.
Installing without wrecking the roots
The best moment to add a pole is at repotting, when the root ball is out of the pot and you can position the pole right against the base of the plant, drive it to the bottom, and firm the compost around it — zero root damage. Adding one to an established pot works too: place it a few centimetres from the main stems and push down slowly and vertically; if you hit firm resistance, shift position rather than forcing through a major root. A wobbly pole is a failed pole, so make sure it reaches the base of the pot.
Attaching and training
- Tie each climbing stem to the pole with soft plant ties, Velcro strips or strips of old tights — never thin wire or string, which cuts into growing stems.
- Tie loosely: the stem should be held against the moss but able to thicken.
- Point the aerial roots toward the pole; you can gently pin them against the moss until they grip.
- Check ties every couple of months and loosen any that are starting to bite.
Tip: mist the pole, not just the plant. Aerial roots only bother attaching to a surface that's at least slightly damp. A quick spray of the moss a few times a week — or a pole with a hollow core you can pour water into — makes the difference between a plant that grips and one that just leans.
Maintenance and going taller
Once your plant reaches the top of its pole, don't let it dangle: either extend a stackable pole with another segment, or prune the growing tip just above a node — pruning triggers branching and a fuller plant, and the cutting roots easily in water. If an older moss pole starts to slump or rot, plan the swap for your next repot: cut the old ties, transfer the stems to the new pole, and any aerial roots that were rooted into the moss can be trimmed without harming the plant.
Common mistakes
- Installing a short pole 'for now' — you'll be doing this again in six months. Buy taller or stackable.
- Letting the moss stay bone-dry, then wondering why nothing attaches.
- Tying with wire or tight string that strangles thickening stems.
- Forcing a pole through the middle of a dense root ball instead of waiting for repotting day.
- Giving a pole to a plant that doesn't climb.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use a moss pole for a Monstera?
No — a Monstera will survive without one. But if you want the big, split, mature leaves, some kind of vertical support is the most reliable way to get them. A plank or sturdy trellis works too.
Should aerial roots go into the pole or into the soil?
Either is fine. Roots that reach the soil will feed the plant; roots that grip the pole anchor it and support bigger leaves. Never cut them all off just for tidiness.
Do I need to keep the moss pole wet all the time?
Lightly moist is the target, not soaking. A few sprays a week is usually enough indoors. In very dry rooms, a hollow-core pole you can water from the top holds moisture longer.
My pole is full — can I just cut the top off my plant?
Yes. Prune just above a node: the plant branches below the cut, and the removed tip can be rooted in water and planted back into the same pot for a fuller look.
