Grow Lights for Houseplants: A No-Nonsense Guide

Do your plants need a grow light? What PPFD really means, how many hours to run one, how close to hang it — and the mistakes that waste your money.

Most houseplants are happy under a full-spectrum white LED grow light delivering roughly 100–200 µmol/m²/s (PPFD) at leaf level — in practice, a decent LED bar or bulb hung 25–35 cm above the foliage. Run it 12–14 hours a day on a timer. Ignore watts and lumens when comparing lights; PPFD at a stated distance is the only number that tells you what the plant receives.

There is a moment in every houseplant owner's year — usually as the days shorten and the light through the window turns thin — when the plants start to sulk and the question arrives: do I need a grow light? The honest answer is that many people don't, some people absolutely do, and almost everyone who buys one is baffled by the numbers on the box. This guide cuts through the units, the purple glow and the marketing.

Does your plant actually need one?

A grow light earns its keep in three situations: rooms with small, north-facing or obstructed windows where even 'low-light' plants merely survive; dark seasons, when a windowsill that was generous in June delivers a fraction of the light in December; and ambitions beyond your conditions — propagation, seedlings, or high-light plants like succulents kept far from a window. The telltale signs of light hunger are slow or stopped growth, long stretched stems leaning at the window, small pale new leaves, and variegated plants quietly turning plain green. If that sounds familiar, supplemental light will do more for your collection than any fertiliser.

The only unit that matters: PPFD

Grow-light boxes shout about watts and lumens, and both are nearly useless. Watts measure electricity consumed, not light produced. Lumens measure brightness as human eyes perceive it, which is not how plants use it. The number to look for is PPFD — photosynthetic photon flux density — measured in µmol/m²/s: how much plant-usable light actually lands on the leaves at a given distance. A good manufacturer publishes a PPFD chart showing values at, say, 30 cm and 60 cm. If a light lists only watts and lumens, that silence tells you something too.

  • Low-light foliage (pothos, snake plant, ZZ): 50–100 µmol/m²/s keeps them genuinely healthy, not just alive.
  • Most tropical foliage (monstera, philodendron, calathea): 100–200 µmol/m²/s is the comfortable middle.
  • Brighter aroids and collector plants: 150–300 µmol/m²/s rewards you with bigger, faster leaves.
  • Succulents and cacti: 300–800+ µmol/m²/s — this is why they fail on bookshelves and thrive under proper lights.
  • Fruiting plants (chillies, dwarf tomatoes indoors): 500+ µmol/m²/s, firmly in serious-hardware territory.

White light beat the purple glow

Early LED grow lights combined red and blue diodes into the infamous 'blurple' glare — functional for plants, miserable to live with, and hopeless for actually looking at your collection, since every leaf appears black. Modern full-spectrum white LEDs deliver the same photosynthetically useful range (400–700 nm) while rendering your room, and any early pest or disease symptoms, in true colour. Unless you're outfitting a dedicated grow tent, choose white. Your plants photosynthesise happily under it, and your living room doesn't look like a nightclub.

Hours and distance: the working recipe

Photoperiod is the easy half: most tropical foliage does well on 12–14 hours of light a day, and seedlings and cuttings appreciate 14–16. More is not better — plants need a dark period, and 24-hour light stresses many species. Distance is the other half: with typical LED bars and bulbs, 25–35 cm above the foliage is the sensible starting point, then adjust using the manufacturer's PPFD chart. Halving the distance roughly quadruples the intensity, which is why 'a bit closer' is such a powerful adjustment — and why a light that seems weak at a metre may be perfectly adequate at 30 cm.

  • Put the light on a cheap plug-in timer on day one. Consistency matters more than perfection, and nobody switches a lamp on manually at 7 a.m. forever.
  • Watch the plant, not just the chart: stretching towards the lamp means raise the intensity or lower the light; bleached or scorched top leaves mean back off.
  • Regular household LED bulbs are not grow lights — pleasant to the eye, but usually far too weak at plant height.
  • Mind the microclimate: enclosed shelves and cabinets under lights warm up and dry out, so check watering more often.

Pro tip: in winter, you don't have to choose between window and lamp. Leave plants in their bright window and run a grow light above them for a few hours in the morning and evening, book-ending the short day. Warning: 'full spectrum', 'sunlike' and '1000W equivalent' are marketing phrases with no regulated meaning. The only trustworthy comparison between two grow lights is their published PPFD at a stated distance — if a seller can't or won't show that chart, spend your money elsewhere.

Let the plant tell you it's working

Give any new lighting setup two to four weeks, then look for the verdict: new leaves closer together on the stem, richer colour, faster growth, variegation returning. If instead you see pale, crisped or bleached foliage directly under the lamp, it's too close. Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular LED bulb as a grow light?

Usually not effectively. Ordinary bulbs are designed for human eyes, and by the time their light spreads to plant height it's typically far below useful intensity. Some strong white LEDs can support very low-light plants at close range, but a purpose-made grow bulb with a published PPFD chart costs little more and removes the guesswork.

How many hours a day should a grow light be on?

For most houseplants, 12–14 hours on a timer; for seedlings and cuttings, 14–16. Always leave a genuine dark period — running lights 24/7 stresses most plants and wastes electricity. If a plant needs short days to flower (Christmas cactus is a classic case), long light evenings will actually delay its blooming.

How far above plants should a grow light hang?

For typical LED bars and bulbs, start 25–35 cm above the foliage and fine-tune from there using the manufacturer's PPFD chart and the plant's response. Closer means dramatically more light — halving the distance gives about four times the intensity — so small adjustments go a long way.

Are purple grow lights better than white ones?

No. Red-blue 'blurple' fixtures were an early-LED efficiency trick, and plants grow well under them, but modern full-spectrum white LEDs deliver equivalent usable light while letting you enjoy your plants and spot pests, diseases and deficiencies in true colour. For a home, white wins on every practical count.

Do grow lights use a lot of electricity?

Modern LED grow lights are modest consumers: a typical 20–40 W unit running 12 hours a day uses about 0.25–0.5 kWh daily — pennies at ordinary household rates. Efficiency varies between fixtures, though, so compare the manufacturer's µmol/J figure if running costs matter to you.
